About this course

MASTER 5s in Your Factory

5s is a commonly used but frequently misunderstood tool. Whether you are aiming to implement a 5s rollout, as part of a broader continuous improvement initiative, or considering a refresh or maybe you have tried and failed and are looking to renew your faith in 5s.

While 5s is widely considered as a fundamental pillar of continuous improvement, unfortunately, it commonly fails, but despite this, 5s should be the backbone of your continuous improvement ambition because when you understand why 5s is such an essential tool, you get why it’s so important. Rest assured, this is not 1940’s lean manufacturing! TMI is at the forefront of operational excellence; our learning captures current thinking, and we recognise that understanding the tools is only part of what makes lean a success in the modern manufacturing business.

Why is 5s Important?

5s is established lean methodology for organising, cleaning, standardising, and maintaining workplace efficiency, safety, and productivity. It is an excellent example of when understanding the pitfalls improves sustainable implementation, serving as an essential cultural enabler. Failure points are an easy fix. We empower a back-to-basics approach by understanding that 5s is more than just a tool and enabling individuals to thrive and advance in their roles.

5s Workshop

This one-day workshop outlines the basics of 5s, from its importance and the pitfalls to ethical implementation and audit.

Implementing the 5s methodology requires careful planning and execution. Delegates will learn what the 5s methodology is, the purpose of 5s and its connection to value, including the 7-wastes. This understanding will empower them to be more in control, requiring less support from their supervisor or team leader.

Delegates will learn how to build a 5s strategy, from selecting a dedicated team that will be responsible for the successful implementation of 5s to overseeing the practical and ethical implementation process. This includes understanding the importance of employee involvement, maintaining ethical standards, and ensuring the practicality of the implementation. They will also learn how to gradually expand 5s to other areas of the organisation with an adequately defined 5s rollout.

The workshop also covers 5s within lean manufacturing strategy and visual management, why it’s essential to establish clear metrics to measure the success of the implementation, and how to use the tools to monitor and improve the methodology to ensure its effectiveness.

Finally, how to make 5s part of company culture and build organisational commitment so everyone develops a 5s habit.

By the end of the workshop, delegates will be able to create a plan and know what tools to use to support the implementation of their own 5s project. Delegates can suggest a before and after pilot project and submit results that include system and cultural impacts to achieve Fellowship certification.

5s Benefits

  • Recognising the pitfalls allowing delegates to determine if their 5s programme is fit for purpose
  • Empower employees at all levels to be more in control, requiring less support from their supervisor or team leader
  • Empowers employees by involving them in decision making, empowering autonomy, and creating a pipeline of future leaders
  • Build more engaged teams that actively spot improvements and deliver continuous initiatives on the shop floor
  • Improve safety, quality and productivity and streamline the factory, making it easier to manage
  • Addresses minor issues before they escalate into major problems that hinder growth
  • Helping manufacturers compete in a competitive Global market
  • Improves the overall work/life balance for employees thanks to more efficient operations

TMI mini-Fellowship project enables delegates to prove the impact of 5s by putting learning into action. We encourage a ‘give it a try’ approach, which aims to create a shift in behaviour and create the opportunity for employees to develop sustainable skills and to help organisations achieve their continuous improvement goals with rigour.

Further Information

On-Site Support
Where a business has more people, it would like to be exposed to training quickly. It is sometimes more cost-effective to host training on-site. In-house groups can focus on their specific challenges, enhance teamwork, and build on existing CI strategies. There is an additional benefit of the delivery practitioner being on-site. It is easier to manage dates and times to suit shifts and holidays. In-house workshops are subject to numbers and development time. We can enhance or theme material to reflect your logo, brand values and mission statements. Travel and expenses are quoted separately; terms and conditions of booking apply.
