Educational Aims:
- To understand the concepts and philosophy of Six Sigma and variation reduction, and the business value it brings to organisations
- To understand how Six Sigma compares with and complements Lean Thinking
- To appreciate the DMAIC methodology and understand some basic Six Sigma and problem-solving tools
Teaching / Learning methods:
A mix of teaching methods will be employed that combine presentation, discussion, group activity and interactive learning exercises

- Six Sigma Overview and Connections with Lean
- Six Sigma Project Definition
- Introduction to Basic Statistics
- Measurement Systems Analysis
- SPC (Statistical Process Control) and Capability
- Process Mapping
- Cause and Effect Matrix and FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis)
- Basic Problem-Solving Tools
- Control
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module delegates should be able to:
- Describe what Six Sigma is including the DMAIC methodology, and how it relates to Lean thinking
- Contribute to project definition so that projects are set up for success
- Support and contribute to Six Sigma project execution including application of key tools, e.g. process mapping, capability analysis, FMEA etc., leading to meaningful business results
- Apply basic problem-solving tools, e.g. fishbone diagram, scatter-plot
- Understand good practices associated with control and sustaining improvements
