Building a Culture of Growing, Enduring Excellence.

We think the Rubik’s Cube is a great cultural excellence metaphor for continuous improvement and the Shingo Guiding Principles.

For example, if you just focus on one face of your cube it is possible to solve that face, but when you move on to solving the next face you invariably undo your good work on the first face. This is because achieving continuous, sustainable improvement for operational excellence requires a more integrative, cultural approach. It is the Manufacturing Institutes experience that when organisations discover the Shingo Guiding Principles, and apply this approach, they achieve significantly greater results than believed possible in a relatively short timeframe, because it all becomes less of a puzzle.

Just like solving the Rubik’s Cube, there are many different approaches and methods but by approaching a problem more holistically, we gain a better understanding that an action taken on any face impacts each of the other faces.

• Solving one face by considering the need to establish the first layer of the four faces supported by this face.
• Solving the middle and top layers.
• Solving the top face while keeping the top layer intact.

On the surface, introducing tools, systems and supporting behaviours to drive results may seem to be straightforward, as standards exist. However, it is very unlikely that legacy processes and systems have been holistically developed and if so, they almost certainly have not considered the needs and culture of the organisation. In this sense, every action in solving your cube is taken in the context of the whole cube, not just the part being acted upon and this is SHINGO.

Licensed Affiliate since 2008, the first in Europe

Our involvement in this prestigious award has gathered pace in recent years as the number of companies seeking recognition or assessment against the global Shingo standard has increased.

The Manufacturing Institute is not only the first partner of the Shingo Institute in Europe but has helped more organisations achieve recognition than any other Shingo affiliate, including the first two sites recognised in Europe, Ultraframe and BAE Systems, and the first 3 full Shingo Prize recipients in Europe, Abbott Vascular, Depuy Synthes and Newsprinters Eurocentral results

More recently we proudly supported Ipsen and Jabil Healthcare, who both received the prestigious prize.
