About this course
TMI Site Visits showcase real people and real-life manufacturing examples of continuous improvement. They are insightful, interesting, and memorable. To this end, our site visit partners are able to demonstrate ‘what good looks like’ and reveal the highs and lows of their respective experiences in the spirit of shared best practise.
The literal translation for Gemba is ‘the real place’ and in business, it refers to the real place where value is created, such as the factory floor. We believe that to truly understand how training translates it needs to be seen in action. The shared experience of peer-to-peer collaboration has always been a valuable part of our learning, in this context, a site visit provides a living case study, including where experimentation and experience proves the successful use of tools, implemented with visibility and accountability, to inspire companies on their own journeys towards sustainable operational excellence.
Who is this course for?
Perfect for managers, team leaders and change agents and anyone involved with a specific business improvement project, who need to contrast and compare what good looks like. The site visit is great for individuals looking to implement more visual management, and leader standard work, and those with responsibility for productivity and performance improvement. Attendees of individual one-day workshops should have a basic knowledge of lean tools and techniques. Selected workshops are delivered as part of The Manufacturing Institutes Accelerated Route to Lean Manufacturing programme and can be accessed individually.

One-Day Site Visit Indicative Outline
Site Visit:
One of the best ways to experience the practical application of the Lean tools and techniques is to see firsthand how they drive continuous improvement initiatives and momentum.
Agenda:

■ Host site introductions including operational excellence journey, challenges, and ambitions

Workshop:
Delegates will have seen Lean tools and techniques in situ and how this supports sustainable strategies for success. Furthermore, how operational excellence ambition drives morale, momentum and enables the sustainability of long-term improvements and change management. Using this learning, they will be able to identify what it takes to create the right work environment, how to secure commitment and key factors for Lean implementation. They will understand belief in the context of operational excellence and the know what is required of a Lean champion to support continuous improvement in their own organisations.
Peer to Peer Reflection:
Discussion, and feedback presentations back to host site. This aims to summarise what the site does really well, opportunities identified and what delegates can take away from the visit.
What is Go, Look, See?
Along with Genchi Genbutsu or ‘Go, Look, See’, Gemba is the Japanese term for ‘the real place’ where valuecreating work occurs. The Go, Look, See exercise as part of this workshop enables delegates to observe real work in real time by engaging with new people in a manufacturing environment different from their own. It is an opportunity to see real-world application of theory, where delegates can contrast and compare their own experiences and insights within the group, which are then collectively fed back to site.
This workshop is delivered as part of The Manufacturing Institutes Accelerated Route to Lean Manufacturing training.
